What Does Refreshable Braille Display Mean?
A refreshable braille display is a peripheral device that allows blind or visually impaired people to interact with a computer. A braille monitor uses the braille system that blind people use to read. Raised dots spell out text that the user traces a finger over to read.
A refreshable braille display is also known as a braille monitor, braille terminal or simply a braille display.
Techopedia Explains Refreshable Braille Display
A braille display is one
method blind or visually-impaired users can choose to interact with a computer
as an alternative to a screen reader. A braille display consists of a
rectangular device with grouped rows of pins. The pins are raised and lowered
to spell out letters in the braille alphabet. Braille displays use groups of 40
by 80 pins, or braille cells. Models for notetaking use cells of 10 by 40 pins. A user reads the letters by touch.
The advantage
of using a braille terminal over a speech synthesizer is that users who are
both deaf and blind can use them, whereas a speech program can only be used by someone who can hear.
