ISO 9000 is a family of international standards that seek to document and enforce quality assurance and management across a broad range of industries. It was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and has been implemented by at least 350,000 organizations worldwide within industries ranging from service to technology to manufacturing.

ISO 9000 was originally published in 1987, and has been heavily revised in 2000, 2008 and 2015. The original version is said to have been based on the BS 5750 series of standards that the British Standards Institution (BSI Group) proposed to the ISO in 1979.
Organizations can be certified by ISO 9000 through an assessment process that involves submitting for an examination. The assessor subjects the submitting organization’s key staff to a series of interviews and tests to ensure that they understand and are in compliance with ISO’s strict parameters.
